In-Conference Learning Sessions:

Savvy Conference XI participants will generate valuable experiential knowledge in the conference “learning sessions.” To help you generate knowledge and intent to implement it immediately, you will meet in a moderated, learning rich discussion focused on one topic per session. (See topic descriptions below.)

These sessions help you solidify your knowledge from the conference speakers and learn a variety of ways you can select from to apply the knowledge in your organization. Here is how it works: choose your topic, participate in the session and learn what other participants learned. You compare and discuss their learning, how they intend to use it, and discuss its expected impact on their organizations and processes.

Learning Group Session 1: “Know Market Value and Customer Expectations to Eliminate Non-Value Added Work – Simultaneously”

Understanding customer value that eliminates non value added work is a priority issue. This is the earliest task in “Knowledge First’ product development. Discussion elements include: value equation elements, customer use factors, “go see” methods, engineer-customer interface practices.

Learning Group Session 2: “Chief Engineer: 21st Century Product Development Team Leadership Model”

Chief Engineer roles and responsibilities as described by the late Allen Ward have attracted the interest of development organizations. Discussion elements will include: current state of development team leaders, administrators and decision makers.

Learning Group Session 3: “Build Teams of Responsible Experts”

Discussion elements will include: product performance and design, expert design teams greater knowledge flow into development teams, Allen Ward’s System for Building Talented Knowledge Experts.

Learning Group Session 4: “A3 Thinking/Practices”

Discussion elements: A3 content types (more than two dozen uses), starting A3 practices, impact of A3s, coach/mentor, excellence in A3s.

Learning Group Session 5: “Introduce and Sustain Habits for the Pursuit of Excellence”

Discussion elements: the six virtues as prerequisites for sustainable improvement, ways to reduce technical knowledge waste, hoarding and flow, practical ways for individuals to trust themselves and their colleagues to pursue work and process excellence.

Savvy ® Discussion Groups

Savvy members invite you to participate in discussion groups during the
conference immediately following speaker presentations. To help you
generate useful experiential knowledge and to focus your intent to implement
it immediately, you will participate with other engineering managers in a
moderated, learning-rich discussion focused on one topic per session. (see topic
descriptions below).

Here is how it works: choose your topic, participate in the session and learn
what other participants learned. You compare and discuss their learning, how
they intend to use it, and discuss its expected impact on their organizations and
processes.

These discussion sessions help you solidify your knowledge and learn a variety
of ways to apply the knowledge in your organization.

Day 1 Savvy ® Discussion Groups

Learning Group Session “INNOVA:”
“Build Innovation and Entrepreneurship”

Discussion elements will include: innovation thinking/practice in all levels of the
knowledge based product development organization. Allen Ward’s System for
Building Talented Knowledge Experts.

Day 2 Savvy ® Discussion Groups

Learning Group Session “SCRUM”
“The Implementation of Scrum”

Gottfried Caspari and colleagues will demonstrate and discuss their SCRUM
experiences. Discussion elements include: visual tools, team dynamics, team
leadership, and team flexibility in generating knowledge and product deliverables.
Conference participants who are using SCRUM methods will provide a range
of perspectives on this important methodology for getting development work off
the “to-do list onto the DONE” list.

Learning Group Session “CE”
“Chief Engineer: 21st Century Product Development Team Leadership Model”

Chief Engineer roles and responsibilities as described by the late Allen Ward have attracted the interest of development organizations. Discussion elements will include: current state of development team leaders, administrators and decision makers.

Conference Deliverables:

Savvy Conference XI participants receive hard copies of speaker presentations bound in a Conference Proceedings document. Participants also receive 11”x17” diagram visuals of valuable conference learning session topics, which enable you to show and explain conference knowledge to your collaborators in your development organization.

The Savvy Leaders Bibliography comprising descriptions of books, monographs and theses are also included. Management working papers on the leadership habits are the newest addition to the Savvy Conference deliverables.
