Toyota's Lean Product Innovation, Design and Development System has produced a stream of new vehicles that has propelled Toyota to the top global market share in 2008. Set Based Design has contributed to this stream of innovations.
"Set Based Design," is a term coined by the late Allen Ward and discovered at Toyota in Japan in the mid 90s by Durward Sobek. SBD simultaneously explores multiple discrete solutions. Engineers analyze these solutions with low cost tests/analysis that define the limits of the solution sets, eliminating the weakest solutions. The solution chosen has thus been proven before committing it to development. SBD has been learned and implemented by engineering leaders in several USA based product development organizations.
The Savvy Consortium’s SET BASED DESIGN SYMPOSIUM offers the only focused learning event in the USA in which participants learn about the implementation of set based design and by immerse themselves in a demonstration of SBD practice.
These engineering presenters will present their case study experiences implementing Set Base Design thinking and practice. They will describe how implementation helped deliver customer valued innovation, reduced design risk and improved design engineering individuals’ competence and collaboration. The Savvy Symposium attendees will participate in a “hands on” demonstration called “how to generate a set of innovative designs to a problem.” This demonstration will involve conference attendees applying what they learn from the speakers.
